New Tapes: Von Einem / Hour House / L.A. County Morgue.

AST039 - VON EINEM - "RETURNED TO THE RIVER" C28
Von Einem is the current solo guise of Mark Groves (formerly Absoluten Calfeutrail, one half of Dead Boomers). On "Returned To The River", stuttering harsh samples and beats are laced with Groves' dulcet tones detailing gritty details of the South Australian murders which give the project its name. In parts more beat-oriented than the first VE release and with less vocal presence, this tape presents a logical continuation of the project's grim agenda.

AST040 - HOUR HOUSE - "STROKE" C29
Hour House, formerly Motion (Sic), rose from the ashes of Orinokoflo. HH is comprised of Sam Kenna and Mark Leacy, who both served time in Castings and Painted Jesus Brown together, as well as having numerous other groups to their credit. "Stroke" is a masterwork in soundtracking eerie atmospheres. Music for a sophisticated haunted house perhaps. Woozy synths and field recordings stripped of context are used to create discomfort. The B-side is mostly comprised of an Orinokoflo jam that went awry, hence sees HH as a three-piece. One of the best Altered States releases yet.

AST041 - LA COUNTY MORGUE - "IT WAS BECOME OVER" C30
LA County Morgue is hands down one of the most interesting projects currently active in Newcastle. This is the second release for LACM, the solo apparition of Jarrod Skene, who also runs the excellent Mazurka Editions label on which his debut was released earlier this year. Skene described "It Was Become Over" as "less musical" than the first, I guess that figures. What you receive is total immersion in murk. The A-side is reels of vocals disfigured beyond recognition. The flip is a minimal dosage of feedback and pops. Essential.

Half High - Shapeless Advice 7" Available.

AST035: HALF HIGH – SHAPELESS ADVICE 7”

Half High is a Sydney duo made of up of Lucy Phelan (Lucy Cliché, Knitted Abyss) and Matthew Hopkins (Four Door, Hochman & Hopkins), both previously of Naked On The Vague. This 7”, the first on Altered States, features two tracks of the same uneasy ambience presented by the group on their debut cassette (now on vinyl care of R.I.P. Society) released earlier in the year. The A-side is predominantly synth and tapes at work. The B-side is vastly more industrial. Maltreated vocals float over a distorted thud. 150 copies on black vinyl. $10 + post.

New Tapes: Teen Ax / Orinokoflo / VDO.

AST036 – TEEN AX – “FORBIDDEN LOVE” C19
Sydney duo Teen Ax, made up of Sam Chiplin (Housewives) and Toney McKey (the almighty Pleasure Bros), have been making a cacophonous noise for the last few years now with releases on Mazurka Editions and their own Street Muscle imprint. In contrast to their usual balls-out wall of guitar noise style scree, this is a much creepier affair. Guitars are the primary source in this drooling tangle, but silence figures just as heavily. Sounds pretty close to some of the sounds issued by Breakdance The Dawn over the last millennia.

AST037 – ORINOKOFLO – “WHITE ETHNIC” C54
An uncovered gem recorded straight to tape before Orinokoflo played their last show in Newcastle late last year. Woozy synth textures, beats and dense atmospherics feature, kinda sounding like a lost Radiophonic experiment in parts. Same recording on both sides.

AST038 - VDO – “FISH TANK FULL OF COINS” c60
One part Mouving (Joshua Petherick) and other part Moffarfarrah, et al (Christopher LG Hill), VDO specialise in etching dense webs of manipulated tape sampling. Plundered synth bleeps, new age muzak and tape screeches form a miasma of (un)easy listening. Mmm, fishy.

News.

I never thought I'd get hip to e-commerce, but Altered States now has a bandcamp page where you can listen to tracks and buy stuff if that's what you do. More will be uploaded soon.

To everyone who has asked about the Feral Flotsam comps - there will be some copies available really soon, just sorting out some packaging shortages. More new releases soon, including a 7" by Half High and tapes by a whole bunch of people. Until then, live free or die hard.

New Tapes: Static Cleaner Lost Reward / Unwar / Orinokoflo.

AST029: STATIC CLEANER LOST REWARD - $MILE$ C36

I feel like I’ve been sitting on this release for an eternity. SCLR = sounds created by Tarquin Manek, member of Bum Creek and numerous other entities. Static Cleaner sees Manek using similar tools as he would under Thug Quota (another of his solo projects), here the gtr/drum/clarinet/whatever else forges lo-fried psych. Looped hallucinations in the vein of Lamborghini Crystal, but wholly unique.

AST033: UNWAR – SLEEP DOPE C60

Unwar is a relatively recent guise cultivated by Michael Donelley, curator of the MYMWLY / Hashram collectives and grand dragoon in rituals including 6majik9, Sun Of The Seventh Sister, No Guru, et al. None of this is especially relevant to Unwar though, as the order here is synthesiser music from eras past, albeit firmly planted in the present. I’d describe Sleep Dope as kosmiche if the word didn’t reek of record-collector semen. Sections of ecstatic alignment are bookended by slightly more concealed glimmers. A long stretch of space to get lost in.

AST034: ORINOKOFLO – ARNICA C34

Orinokoflo was a short-lived Melbourne trio made up of Sam Kenna (Radio CaCa, Castings), Mark Leacy (Cistern Corrupt, Castings) and Cooper Bowman (Flat Fix, Junk Sick). The point being made here was druggy, beat-driven weirdness. The halfway point between Idea Fire Company and Hieroglyphic Being? Maybe not. But the names dropped give you some indication of what was being attempted. Following one of the four shows that we played, someone labelled us “electronic free jazz”. That’ll do. This is Orinokoflo’s first release proper and probably the last.

White Night is Ted Baillieu honouring an election promise. Low Headroom is a show organised by the fine folks over at Sabbatical between the hours of 12am-7am in the bowels of the Art Centre. At the very least, this is going to be weird.

CB / Enak Split CS on Mazurka // Ferret Comp on Grog Pappy.

Two recent AST-related releases:

Cooper Bowman / Enak split on excellent Newcastle label, Mazurka Editions. Two sides of tape-sourced berserk murk. Also available from Alberts Basement.

A Crabby Bogman track on the new "Ferret" compilation from the almighty Grog Pappy. Also appearing are Rats With Wings, Moffarfarrah, Samaan Fieck, Herby Cock-Hands, Prehistoric Fuckin' Moron(s), Tistriallal Binds, The Mermaids + others. Comes with a sticker, woo. Available from the label or probably from me soon.

Coming up are a bunch of long-overdue new tapes on AST, a series of 7" lathes and some stuff being released on other labels.
