New Tapes: Von Einem / Hour House / L.A. County Morgue.
AST039 - VON EINEM - "RETURNED TO THE RIVER" C28
Von Einem is the current solo guise of Mark Groves (formerly Absoluten Calfeutrail, one half of Dead Boomers). On "Returned To The River", stuttering harsh samples and beats are laced with Groves' dulcet tones detailing gritty details of the South Australian murders which give the project its name. In parts more beat-oriented than the first VE release and with less vocal presence, this tape presents a logical continuation of the project's grim agenda.
AST040 - HOUR HOUSE - "STROKE" C29
Hour House, formerly Motion (Sic), rose from the ashes of Orinokoflo. HH is comprised of Sam Kenna and Mark Leacy, who both served time in Castings and Painted Jesus Brown together, as well as having numerous other groups to their credit. "Stroke" is a masterwork in soundtracking eerie atmospheres. Music for a sophisticated haunted house perhaps. Woozy synths and field recordings stripped of context are used to create discomfort. The B-side is mostly comprised of an Orinokoflo jam that went awry, hence sees HH as a three-piece. One of the best Altered States releases yet.
AST041 - LA COUNTY MORGUE - "IT WAS BECOME OVER" C30
LA County Morgue is hands down one of the most interesting projects currently active in Newcastle. This is the second release for LACM, the solo apparition of Jarrod Skene, who also runs the excellent Mazurka Editions label on which his debut was released earlier this year. Skene described "It Was Become Over" as "less musical" than the first, I guess that figures. What you receive is total immersion in murk. The A-side is reels of vocals disfigured beyond recognition. The flip is a minimal dosage of feedback and pops. Essential.
